After the end of the First World War, the impoverished Count Tassilo hired himself out as a simple administrator on the estate of Countess Mariza. Because of her wealth, she sees herself surrounded by numerous admirers, whom she tries to evade by announcing her engagement to the fictional operetta character Kolomán Zsupán. A little later, however, a Mr. Baron and pig farmer of the same name actually stands in front of her door and agrees with the engagement. A confusion about love, jealousy and financial circumstances inevitably takes its course.

The cheerful relationship drama about Count Tassilo and Countess Mariza is one of Emmerich Kálmán's great operetta successes. With foxtrot, csárdás and waltz, people dance on the ruins of the collapsed dual monarchy. The swan song to the old world between the Danube and Puszta hit the taste of the international audience exactly. Immortal melodies such as “Come with me to Varaždin” or “I would like to dance again” guarantee stubborn catchy tunes even today. The Austrian director Alexandra Frankmann makes her debut at STAATSTHEATER and tells the turbulent story of love and money in the glamorous flair of the Roaring Twenties.
