Inspired by the mystical poetry of American Trappist monk Thomas Merton, the three charming dances All These Lighted Things were brought to life in 2017 by Riccardo Muti during American composer Elizabeth Ogonek’s residency with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Ogonek’s music, flexible and weightless, features an abundant percussion section, lending a distinctive charm to these pieces. While the Violin Concert Op. 8 composed by 17-year-old Richard Strauss is unusual, it reflects the brilliance and skills of a deeply romantic young man. Prokofiev effortlessly elevates his music to the level of Tchaikovsky’s great ballets with Romeo and Juliet. The composer’s masterful arrangement of the two Suites captures the essence of this brilliant score while giving conductors the space to create their own interpretation.

Inspirées par la poésie mystique du moine trappiste américain Thomas Merton, les trois petites danses All These Lighted Things ont été crées en 2017 par Riccardo Muti lors de la résidence de la compositrice américaine Elizabeth Ogonek à l’Orchestre Symphonique de Chicago. Sa musique, souple et comme en apesanteur, utilise une abondante section de percussion donnant à ces pièces un charme singulier. Si le Concerto pour violon op. 8 composé par un Richard Strauss de 17 ans est une curiosité, il témoigne surtout de la précocité et du savoir faire d’un jeune homme éperdument romantique. Avec Roméo et Juliette, Prokofiev hisse sans peine sa musique au niveau des grands ballets de Tchaïkovski. Magistralement arrangées par le compositeur, les deux Suites reprennent les grands moments de cette géniale partition tout en permettant aux chefs d’orchestre de réaliser leur propre agencement.
