The zarzuela Policemen and thieves is the last commission and premiere of the Teatro de la Zarzuela, although the list of contemporary lyrical works dates back to the eighties and nineties of the last century with a cycle for the old Sala Olimpia. In addition, this title is added to a series of new productions by Spanish authors on the same stage of the Plazuela de Jovellanos.
On this occasion Marco returns with a zarzuela, almost half a century since the premiere of Fuenteovejuna, by Moreno Buendía, in order to update, in a certain way, the genre. For the composer, this new production is "an artistic adventure that I think was worth trying", since it is about tackling a new creative project, bringing political corruption to the stage with the intention of showing it as "a peculiar farce, without the gravity of a devastating criticism, with the self-confidence and lightness of an argument whose intrigue incorporates the tension of 'suspense' in a display of types, figures, hypothetical sets and credible absurdities».
This new zarzuela, with a tragicomic tone, tilted towards sarcastic skepticism, will be musically attractive; The person in charge of leading the orchestra will be José Ramón Encinar, a maestro who knows contemporary music in the country like few others. And, according to the show's own stage director, Carme Portaceli, this will be "as a kind of expiation, we will see if, through irony, through a scenic language that allows us to represent the horror of this story, like a fire on the night of San Juan, we manage to create distance with that which weighs us down like a slab and shames us every day:

La zarzuela Policías y ladrones es el último encargo y estreno del Teatro de la Zarzuela, aunque la lista de obras líricas contemporáneas se remonta a los años ochenta y noventa del siglo pasado con un ciclo para la antigua Sala Olimpia. Además, este título se suma a una serie de nuevas producciones de autores españoles en el mismo escenario de la Plazuela de Jovellanos.
En esta ocasión Marco vuelve con una zarzuela, casi medio siglo desde el estreno de Fuenteovejuna, de Moreno Buendía, con el fin de actualizar, en cierta forma, el género. Para el compositor esta nueva producción es «una aventura artística que creo merecía la pena intentar», ya que se trata de afrontar un proyecto creativo novedoso, subir a la escena la corrupción política con la intención de mostrarla como «una farsa peculiar, sin la gravedad de una crítica demoledora, con el desparpajo y la ligereza de un argumento cuya intriga incorpora la tensión del ‘suspense’ en un despliegue de tipos, figuras, lances hipotéticos y absurdos verosímiles».
Esta nueva zarzuela, con un tono tragicómico, escorado hacia el sarcástico escepticismo, resultará atractiva musicalmente; el encargado de llevar a la orquesta será José Ramón Encinar, un maestro que conoce como pocos la música contemporánea del país. Y, según indica la propia directora de escena del espectáculo, Carme Portaceli, esto será «como una especie de expiación, vamos a ver si, mediante la ironía, mediante un lenguaje escénico que nos permita representar el horror de esta historia, como un fuego en la noche de San Juan, conseguimos crear distancia con eso que nos pesa como una losa y nos avergüenza cada día
