Humperdinck’s glorious masterpiece is a feast for the ears with a stunning score that allows us to travel with Hansel and Gretel through their adventures - overcoming some extraordinary obstacles along their way. 

Child-friendly and based on a story by the Grimm brothers, this opera allows the younger members of our audience to enjoy this classic tale with Dew Fairies, the Sandman plus a dazzling dream pantomime and a wicked witch -  and where good triumphs over evil, allowing the  gingerbread biscuits to turn back to human children once again. 

For the ‘bigger’ children, Hansel and Gretel has a sublime score admired for its folk music-inspired themes with touches of Wagner sprinkled throughout. It’s first performance was conducted by Richard Strauss in Weimar followed in Hamburg with Gustav Mahler. 

A wonderful Irish and International cast has been assembled for this fairytale - a new production by Vivian J. Coates. The excellent Irish mezzo Sarah Richmond will return to Lyric Opera as Hansel and making her operatic debut is young soprano Eimear Harper who sings Gretel. The wonderful Irish mezzo Carolyn Holt returns to Lyric Opera to sing the Mother following her extraordinary interpretation of Charlotte in Werther in 2022. The highly acclaimed English baritone, Dan D'Souza and the sensational New Zealand mezzo Rhonde Browne also make their Lyric Opera debuts as the father and The Witch respectively. The remaining members of the cast are the young, Irish and extremely talented Aimee Kearney and Samantha Brady making their operatic debuts in the roles of The Sandman and The Dew Fairy respectively.
