There are no lesser powers than the "world of the night" and the "world of the sun" that are engaged in a bitter struggle for the truth. Prince Sarastro has kidnapped Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night, and now Prince Tamino is tasked with rescuing her. Because he falls in love with her picture right away, he is happy to agree. He is paired with the witty bird catcher Papageno, who is a bit lonely himself. The path to freedom is rocky and leads the unequal couple through a purifying test temple - they get help from a magical glockenspiel and the eponymous magic flute.

Even though Mozart's Grand Opera stands in the tradition of Viennese puppet and magic operas, it contains nothing less than a piece of humanity in the guise of a fairytale mystery. There is no contradiction here between a cheerful spectacle of stage machinery and the interpretation of serious humanistic ideas. After Die Entführung aus dem Seraglio and Tosca , in-house director Nikolaus Habjan is now dedicating himself to the opera of all operas and, as a puppet magician, will approach this work in a poetic way.

The gala performance on November 11 marks the 35th stage anniversary of Johannes Martin Kränzle, whose operatic career began in September 1987 at the Dortmund Theater and has since taken him to the major centers of the world such as the Bayreuth and Salzburg Festivals and the Metropolitan Opera in New York led.

Es sind keine geringeren Mächte als die „Welt der Nacht“ und die „Welt der Sonne“, die im erbitterten Kampf um die Wahrheit liegen. Der Fürst Sarastro hat Pamina entführt, die Tochter der Königin der Nacht, und nun soll Prinz Tamino sie befreien. Weil dieser sich direkt in ihr Bild verliebt, erklärt er sich auch gern dazu bereit. Man stellt ihm den gewitzten Vogelfänger Papageno zur Seite, der selbst ein bisschen einsam ist. Der Weg in die Freiheit ist steinig und führt das ungleiche Paar durch einen läuternden Prüfungstempel – dabei bekommen sie Hilfe durch ein magisches Glockenspiel und die titelgebende Zauberflöte.

Auch wenn Mozarts Große Oper in der Tradition der Wiener Kasperl- und Zauberopern steht, so steckt darin doch nicht weniger als ein Menschheitsstück im Gewand eines Märchen-Mysteriums. Hier besteht kein Widerspruch zwischen einem heiteren Spektakel der Bühnenmaschinerie und der Ausdeutung ernsthafen humanistischen Gedankenguts. Nach Die Entführung aus dem Serail und Tosca widmet sich Hausregisseur Nikolaus Habjan nun der Oper aller Opern und wird sich als Puppenmagier diesem Werk auf poetische Weise nähern.

Die Galavorstellung am 11. November findet anlässlich des 35-jährigen Bühnenjubiläums von Johannes Martin Kränzle statt, dessen Opernkarriere im September 1987 am Theater Dortmund begann und ihn seither zu den großen Zentren der Welt wie den Bayreuther und Salzburger Festspielen sowie an die Metropolitan Opera in New York führte.
