Ein Haus voller Frauen hat Bernarda Alba nach dem Tod ihres zweiten Ehemannes zu führen. Erste Amtshandlung als Familienoberhaupt ist die Festsetzung einer Trauerzeit von acht Jahren. In dieser Zeit stehen die fünf Töchter unter Hausarrest. Eingesperrt im eigenen Zuhause, verbindet alle die Sehnsucht nach Freiheit und einem Partner. Doch das strenge Regime der Mutter stellt die Reputation im traditionsbewussten Dorf über die Gefühle der Familienmitglieder. Als die älteste Tochter Aussicht auf Heirat mit einem Mann hat, den zwei ihrer Schwestern ebenfalls lieben, führen Intrigen zu Rissen im Familienzusammenhalt und münden schließlich mit einem Suizid in der Katastrophe.

Lorca zeichnet in seinem Werk Frauen, die unter den repressiven Gesellschaftsverhältnissen Spaniens der 1930er-Jahre leiden und lässt die Familientragödie hinter geschlossenen Vorhängen spielen. Die gleichnamige Oper von Aribert Reimann aus dem Jahr 2000 nimmt das Schweigen der Männer in Lorcas Theatertext auf: Bis auf den Einsatz eines Männerchores hinter der Bühne sind alle Partien ausschließlich für Frauenstimmen komponiert. So fokussiert sich der Abend auf die Konflikte zwischen den Frauen, ihre individuellen Kämpfe und Sehnsüchte. Regisseur Dietrich W. Hilsdorf widmet sich in „Bernarda Albas Haus“ den weiblichen Begierden und dem Wunsch ihrer Selbstbestimmung in einer Welt, die dafür keinen Raum lässt.

After the death of her second husband, Bernarda Alba has to lead a house full of women. The first official act as head of the family is to set a mourning period of eight years. During this time, the five daughters are under house arrest. Locked up in their own homes, they all share a longing for freedom and a partner. But the mother's strict regime places reputation in the tradition-conscious village above the feelings of the family members. When the eldest daughter faces the prospect of marriage to a man whom two of her sisters also love, intrigue leads to ruptures in the family ties and ultimately leads to disaster with a suicide.

In his work, Lorca draws women suffering from the repressive social conditions in Spain in the 1930s and lets the family tragedy play out behind closed curtains. The opera of the same name by Aribert Reimann from 2000 takes up the silence of the men in Lorca's theatrical text: apart from the use of a male choir backstage, all parts are composed exclusively for female voices. The evening focuses on the conflicts between the women, their individual struggles and longings. In “Bernarda Albas Haus” director Dietrich W. Hilsdorf addresses female desires and the desire for self-determination in a world that leaves no room for them.
