After the acclaimed performances of Gustav Mahler's Sixth Symphony, Nicola Luisotti returns to the podium of the Stuttgart State Orchestra, with the He has had a close collaboration since his debut in 2001. In the fantasy overture Romeo and Juliet at the beginning of the concert, Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky uses romantically shimmering timbres to let the contrasting worlds of Shakespeare's tragedy collide: the hatred of the feuding Capuleti and Montecchi families and the endless longing of the young lovers. Deeply rooted in the language of romanticism is the Italian Nino Rota, who is best known for his film music, such as Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather. His numerous works for the concert hall are overshadowed by his film scores. Flowing melodic lines and delicate lyricism characterize his Sinfonia sopra una canzone d'amore (Symphony about a Love Song) from 1947, parts of which he used in Luchino Visconti's The Leopard. Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 was written just three years earlier, and the composer's sonority surpassed his entire oeuvre. The pianist Sviatoslav Richter said after the premiere: “Prokofiev looks down from on high on his life and on everything that was. There’s something Olympic about it.”

Nach den umjubelten Aufführungen von Gustav Mahlers Sechster Sinfonie kehrt Nicola Luisotti zurück ans Pult des Staatsorchesters Stuttgart, mit dem ihn seit seinem Debüt 2001 eine enge Zusammenarbeit verbindet. In der Fantasie- Ouvertüre Romeo und Julia zu Beginn des Konzerts lässt Pjotr I. Tschaikowsky mit romantisch schillernden Klangfarben die konträren Welten von Shakespeares Tragödie aufeinanderprallen: den Hass der verfeindeten Familien Capuleti und Montecchi sowie die unendliche Sehnsucht des jungen Liebespaars. In der Sprache der Romantik tief verwurzelt ist der Italiener Nino Rota, der vor allem mit seiner Filmmusik bekannt wurde, wie etwa zu Francis Ford Coppolas Der Pate. Im Schatten seiner Filmpartituren stehen die zahlreichen Werke für den Konzertsaal. Fließende Melodielinien und eine zarte Lyrik zeichnen seine Sinfonia sopra una canzone d’amore (Sinfonie über ein Liebeslied) von 1947 aus, aus der er Teile in Luchino Viscontis Der Leopard verwendete. Nur drei Jahre früher entstand Sergej Prokofjews Sinfonie Nr. 5, mit deren Klangfülle der Komponist sein gesamtes OEuvre übertrumpfte. Der Pianist Swjatoslaw Richter urteilte nach der Uraufführung: „Prokofjew sieht von der Höhe auf sein Leben herab und auf alles, was war. Etwas Olympisches liegt darin.“
