Auch die Nähe zur französischen Musik gehört zur Tradition der Staatskapelle. Schon drei Jahre nach der Uraufführung der Orchesterversion von Maurice Ravels »Ma mère l’Oye« dirigierte Ernst von Schuch die Suite im Januar 1914 in Dresden. »La Valse«, die 1920 in Paris entstandene Hommage an Johann Strauß als »Apotheose des Wiener Walzers« und Abgesang einer Epoche, führte
Fritz Busch 1926 auf. Claude Debussys farbenreiches Tongemälde »Ibéria« wiederum war an der Elbe unter Leitung von Hermann Kutzschbach im Jahr 1912 und damit nur zwei Jahre nach der Pariser Premiere zu hören.
