Tchaikovsky is passion at the extremes: jubilantly euphoric or furiously clashing, but above all highly personal. Is there a better conductor to translate his music today than Teodor Currentzis? The idiosyncratic chief has intoxicated the biggest stages with his supreme expressiveness and eccentric approach. His last encounter with Tchaikovsky in 2017 was engulfed in superlatives. Reviews of Currentzis’ recording of the Pathétique described it as ‘utterly dazzling’ and as delivering ‘an exhilaration that we have never heard before in this symphony.’ This time, moreover, Currentzis collected for his recently formed Utopia Orchestra a group of like-minded, iconoclastic musicians from the best orchestras in the world. There’s no doubt about it: the dramatic, fateful Symphony No. 5 is a perfect fit for them.

Tchaïkovski, c’est la passion poussée au paroxysme, euphorie jubilatoire ou férocité fracassante, mais avant tout et à tout moment hautement personnelle. Y a-t-il aujourd’hui un chef d’orchestre mieux armé que Teodor Currentzis pour diriger les œuvres du compositeur ? Son extrême expressivité et son approche excentrique lui ont permis de conquérir les plus grands plateaux. Sa rencontre précédente avec Tchaïkovski, en 2017, a attiré d’innombrables louanges. Selon les critiques, son enregistrement de la Pathétique était « incroyablement bouillonnant » et suscitait « une excitation jamais encore perçue dans cette symphonie ». Currentzis a rassemblé dans son orchestre Utopia, fraîchement formé, une troupe de musiciens iconoclastes aux mêmes sensibilités que lui. À n’en pas douter, la Symphonie n° 5 dramatique et fatidique semble avoir été écrite pour eux.

Is er vandaag wel een betere dirigent om zijn muziek te vertolken dan Teodor Currentzis? De eigenzinnige chef bedwelmde met zijn opperste expressiviteit en zijn excentrieke aanpak de allergrootste podia. Zijn vorige ontmoeting met Tsjajkovski in 2017 werd beladen onder de superlatieven. Currentzis’ opname van de Pathétique was volgens recensenten ‘ontzettend bruisend’, zorgde voor ‘een opwinding die we nog nooit eerder in deze symfonie hoorden.’ Dit keer verzamelde Currentzis voor zijn pas opgerichte Utopia Orchestra bovendien een groep gelijkgestemde, iconoclastische musici uit de beste orkesten ter wereld. Je hoeft er niet aan te twijfelen: de dramatische, noodlottige Vijfde Symfonie is hen op het lijf geschreven.
