PIRUSHKA The
Tsar's oprichnik Grigory Gryaznoy for the first time in his life experienced a feeling of all-consuming love. It was in vain that he sent matchmakers to the father of Martha, who fell in love with him: the merchant Sobakin flatly refused him, since Martha had already been betrothed to the boyar Ivan Lykov.
Guests come to Gregory. Among them are Malyuta Skuratov, the royal physician Bomeliy and Ivan Lykov, who recently returned from overseas countries. Dirty secretly asks the doctor to get a drug that can bewitch the girl, promising to generously reward for the service. Their conversation was overheard by Gryaznoy's mistress Lyubasha. She will not yield to her happiness and will brutally take revenge on the villainess-homeless woman.

LOVE POTION
Street in the Aleksandrovskaya Sloboda. Martha tells Dunyasha about her beloved groom, Ivan Lykov. The girls' conversation is interrupted by a formidable ghost - Tsar Ivan passed in the distance, looking at them. At dusk, Lyubasha sneaks up to the Sobakins' house. Martha's beauty amazes her. Lyubasha decides to destroy her rival, substituting poison for the love potion begged by Gryazny. Bomelius is ready to fulfill her request, but in return he demands love. Lyubasha agrees to a shameful deal.

DRUZHKO
In the Sobakins' house, preparations are underway for the wedding. It's time to celebrate her, but the royal bride-show, for which the most beautiful girls were gathered in the palace, interfered. Lykov is worried, and Grigory is also worried. Finally Martha returns. Everyone calms down, congratulating the bride and groom. Taking the opportunity, Gryaznoy quietly pours a potion into Martha's glass. Suddenly Malyuta appears with the boyars: the tsar chose not Dunyasha as his wife, as the lovers had hoped, but Martha.

BRIDE
Sobakin is deeply saddened by his daughter's illness, from which no one can cure her. Gryaznoy reports to Martha that under torture Lykov confessed that he intended to kill the sovereign's bride with a potion, and for that he was executed. Martha cannot bear the weight of her grief. It seems to her clouded mind that in front of her is not Gryaznaya, but her beloved fiancé Vanya. She tells him about her wonderful dream. Seeing the madness of Martha, Dirty is terrified: instead of bewitching, he ruined her. Unable to bear the mental anguish, Gryaznoy confesses to the crime he committed - he poisoned Martha and slandered Lykov. Lyubasha confesses that it was she who changed the potion, and in a rage Gryaznoy kills her. He himself is ready to accept any torment in order to atone for the suffering of his beloved.
