Rachmaninov's symphonic poem "Die Toteninsel" (The Island of the Dead), written in 1909, is expressly influenced by Arnold Böcklin's gloomy painting "Die Toteninsel" (The Island of the Dead), made in 1880.
Korngold's "Farewell Songs" from 1920 with their widely spun melodic arcs were created when the 23-year-old composer celebrated his greatest successes in the concert hall and in the opera house. In this work with texts on the subject of death, love and farewell, the profound impressions from the First World War and the effects of a complicated love relationship are reflected.

Hindemith's symphony "Mathis the Painter" from 1934 is one of his most frequently performed works. It was created in connection with the work on the opera of the same name, which deals with the life of the painter Matthias Grünewald. The symphony represents a kind of "sounding triptych" that musically translates various pictorial motifs of Matthias Grünewald's Isenheim Altarpiece in the individual movements.
