While the wood elves play their teasing game with the grumpy water sprite, the mermaid Rusalka only looks up: to the stars that illuminate the human world. Rusalka loves a human prince, but to meet him she must leave everything behind, even sacrificing her voice. She finds no support among people and the prince's initial love for the mute stranger turns out to be fickle. However, Rusalka is only allowed to return to the water kingdom if she brings death to her loved one...

 

With "Rusalka" Dvořák created one of the most popular Czech operas - a touching "lyrical fairy tale" that tells of unfulfilled longings and the incompatibility of two elements between folk song-like melody and Wagner influences, between symphonically dense orchestral writing and tender moments. Due to the applicable hygiene regulations, »Rusalka« will be played with a reduced orchestra.
