St. Michael Prayer

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

AmenOn September 29, at 7:30 p.m., the Gentlemen of the St. Cecilia Choir and Winds, under Massimo Scapin’s baton, will perform the Mass in B flat major, Op. 172, for T solo, TTBB choir, and wind instruments by Joseph Rheinberger († 1901). This Mass setting, which dates from 1892, includes a powerfully expressive a cappella Ave Maria, probably due to the fact it was first performed on the feast of Purification (Candlemas) in Breslau Cathedral (now Wrocław, southwestern Poland).



Also on the program are two instrumental pieces. The Ouverture Royale in D major, for winds, by Italian Baroque composer Nicola Porpora († 1768), who was the leading Italian voice teacher of the 18th century and a noted composer of operas in the elegant, lyrical Neapolitan style; and Stella matutina by the French composer, organist, and teacher Théodore Dubois († 1924), who is remembered for his technical treatises on harmony, counterpoint, and sight-reading.
