Piano Sonata in F minor, Op. 57 sums up a certain stage in Beethoven’s thinking about this genre. On completing the ‘Appassionata’, he would not write another sonata until 1809. And he was working on it in 1804–1805. According to his pupil Ferdinand Ries, the idea for the finale was conceived during a long summer trip through the forest of Döbling. The result was an exceptional work, one of the most demanding and original in terms of both its dazzling technique and its passionate, tempestuous expression. The outer movements, the highly symmetrical, ideally Classically cut Allegro assai and Allegro, ma non troppo – Presto, carry the emotional charge of an exploding bomb. It is softened by the central Andante con moto, calm variations in D flat major that beguile one with their unforced simplicity. For Charles Rosen, a great expert on Classical style, that simplicity, concerning above all the melodic element, is characteristic of the whole sonata. For him, the ‘Appassionata’ is almost ‘cautious’ in formal terms, but at the same time revolutionary, ‘as if only the simplest and most unyielding of frames could contain such power’. The suggestive title, a metaphor of the passions assailing the musical material, was given to the work by a Hamburg publisher who, after Beethoven’s death, issued the Sonata in an arrangement for four hands.

The Chopin nocturnes, in their majority, seem veiled in the aura of the European South – of Italy. Contrary to most Romantics – musicians, writers and poets – who made pilgrimages to the Apennine Peninsula, Chopin never set foot in Italy, and yet that aura he perfectly assimilated through his music: he adored Italian opera, cherished the tunefulness of its song (bel canto!) and sublimated its ‘Mediterranean sweetness’ in his works. He transplanted into his music the Italian style, in its incomparable vocal-instrumental songfulness, as had his predecessors – among the greatest – Bach, Handel, Mozart… A key feature of the Italianisms in the Nocturnes is their thoroughly Chopinian melos, albeit different from the melos of the Mazurkas and Polonaises (derived from Polish sources); it is a melody different in style, contour, pulse and narrative flow, more figured and ornamented that that of the Mazurkas. What the Nocturnes share with the Mazurkas, meanwhile, is their art of polished conclusions – that magical hallmark of the Chopin style...

In general terms, the Nocturnes can be divided into the dramaturgically contrastive, with a dynamically agitated middle section, and those dominated by an air of bliss, of contentment, of a lunar-solar beguilement with beauty. In the late nocturne style, the cantilena narration becomes extended and diversified, imbued, as it were, with the idea of the ‘infinite melody’. The network of harmonic references is at once both expanded and thickened, the frequency of modulations increases, the sequences of ‘tonal wanderings’ are extended, and the circle of keys expands within a single work. Figurations and ornaments afe refined. As a result, the music is opalescent, iridescent with the subtlest shades of musical colour. Yet not all the Nocturnes are suffused with that southern, Italian, aura. There are – admittedly rare – exceptions. Chief among these are two nocturnal dramas (such may they be termed) with an exceptionally forceful expression: the earlier, in the key of C sharp minor, from Op. 27 and the later, in C minor, from Op. 48 (which we shall hear in this concert). What strikes us in the superlative formal construction of the latter is the exceptional condensation of the dramatic element, the maximal deepening of the dramatism.

The Polonaise in A flat major, composed at Nohant, is meant solely to be listened to. It has the shape and character of a dance poem. It is closer to the ballades than to the dances, although it still clearly emanates the pulse and vigour, and especially the majesty, of a polonaise. The opening bars, heralding the entrance of the polonaise, possess verve and a boldness of gesture, as well as dignity and forcefulness. In the theme of the polonaise (the principal, opening theme – the one that stays in our minds), we hear strength, pertinacity and upwards aspiration. Chopin has it played forte and maestoso. Strength is imparted by the octaves of the bass, while pertinacity is generated by the insistent repetition of the opening phrase. That striving upwards carries – for a moment – the haughty, swaggering theme up the keyboard and into the realm of full, absolute sonority. Even the sostenuto, which usually brings a moment of respite, fails to ease the tension, barely restraining the narrative’s propulsion. With the striking of seven chords fortissimo in the unexpected key of E major, Chopin pulls us into the wondrous, almost balladic world of the trio – the central part of the work. An unforgettable impression is made by the simple effect of fanfares resounding at first from afar – against the bass’s regular octaves. Only after the climax and its full sound does a lyrical tone break through for a while. And then, as expected, the polonaise returns, in its proud, heroic plenitude, crowned by a clearly victorious coda.

Arthur Hedley called the Polonaise in A flat major, Op. 53 ‘a work whose praises it is unnecessary to recite’. Jachimecki considered it ‘the most perfect work in the history of the genre’. Hugo Leichtentritt expressed his admiration in the following words: ‘everything that the polonaise contains in terms of sparkle, distinction, strength and enthusiasm was expressed in this masterpiece in the most exhilarating way possible’.

Chopin could not have been familiar with the first (today the most popular) Mephisto Waltz of the four written by his good acquaintance Franz Liszt, since it was only written in 1859–1862, first as an orchestral work, then in versions for four hands, two pianos and solo piano. It illustrates a ‘Dance at the Village Inn’ from Faust by Nikolaus Lenau (1802–1850): Mephistopheles is playing a devilish waltz on the violin, and Faust is dancing to a frenzy with a beautiful country lass. The dance carries them outside, and they disappear into the dark forest.

Franz Liszt’s Sonata in B minor was written in stages and completed in February 1853. It is perhaps Liszt’s most popular contribution to the ongoing ‘discussion’ over the form of large-scale works. Liszt turns the traditional three or four-movement sonata cycle, in which the first movement takes the form of a conflict between two opposing theses, into one grand narrative, containing both opposing theses, consistently shown and processed over the course of the whole work, and also four (or more, depending where one divides the work) movements of differing character. It is worth following the changes made to the gloomy initial motif that appears at the start. Sometimes it sounds by itself, sometimes it is interwoven with other strands. At one point, it swells into mighty thunder, but it always paves the way for new musical material, crucial to the narration. What does it augur at the end of the work? This truly Romantic Sonata has been treated to many poetical interpretations, from references to the Holy Scripture, through allegories of human fate, to the story of Faust, which stirred hearts and minds during Liszt’s times. The most interesting thing, however, is that thanks to Liszt’s masterful command of the musical material and the emotions it bears, after listening to more than half an hour of music played without a break, when the last note fades, one has the impression that only a moment has passed, that everything that was opened has been closed. Just how this happens… is the secret of the masterwork.

Sonata fortepianowa f-moll op. 57 podsumowuje pewien etap myślenia Beethovena o tym gatunku. Po ukończeniu Appassionaty następną skomponuje dopiero w 1809. A pracował Beethoven nad nią w latach 1804–1805. Według jego ucznia – Ferdinanda Riesa – pomysł na finał zrodził się podczas długiej, letniej wędrówki po lasach podmiejskiego Döbling. Powstało dzieło wyjątkowe, zarówno pod względem błyskotliwości technicznej, jak i namiętności (burzliwości) wyrazu jedno z najbardziej wymagających i oryginalnych. Części skrajne, czyli niezwykle symetrycznie, wzorcowo klasycznie skrojone Allegro assai i Allegro, ma non troppo – Presto, niosą ładunek emocjonalny o sile eksplodującej bomby. Łagodzi go centralne Andante con moto – spokojne, urzekające niewymuszoną prostotą wariacje w Des-dur. Owa prostota, w Andante dotycząca przede wszystkim pierwiastka melodycznego, dla wielkiego znawcy stylu klasycznego – Charlesa Rosena – jest cechą charakterystyczną całej sonaty. Dla niego Appassionata pod względem formalnym jest niemal „ostrożna”, ale jednocześnie właśnie rewolucyjna, „jakby tylko najprostsza i najbardziej nieustępliwa rama mogła zmieścić tyle siły”. Nośny tytuł, metafora targających muzyczną materią namiętności, nadany został dziełu przez hamburskiego wydawcę, który już po śmierci Beethovena opublikował Sonatę w opracowaniu na cztery ręce.

Chopinowskie nokturny w większości zdają się nam spowite aurą europejskiego Południa - Italii. Chopin, w odróżnieniu od większości romantyków — muzyków, pisarzy, poetów — pielgrzymujących wręcz nabożnie do włoskich miast, nigdy we Włoszech nie był. Tamtejszą aurę przyswoił sobie jednak przez muzykę: uwielbiał włoską operę, karmił się śpiewnością jej melodii (belcanto), sublimował ich „słodycz śródziemnomorską” w swoich utworach. Przeszczepiał do swojej muzyki styl włoski, w jego niezrównanej wokalno-instrumentalnej śpiewności. Podobnie jak przed nim – z największych – Bach, Händel, Mozart… W nokturnach znamieniem italianizmów jest melos na wskroś chopinowski, ale zarazem odmienny od melosu mazurków i polonezów, z polskich wywodzących się źródeł; melodia inna – w kroju, rysunku, pulsie, narracji, bardziej od mazurkowej sfigurowana i ornamentalna. Wspólna natomiast z mazurkami jest w Nokturnach cyzelacja zakończeń – cudowny wyraz stylu Chopinowskiego…

Ogólnie nokturny podzielić można na dramaturgicznie skontrastowane, z dynamicznie wzburzoną partią środkową, oraz skąpane w aurze błogości, szczęśliwości księżycowo-słonecznego urzeczenia pięknem. W późnym stylu nokturnowym wydłuża się bardziej i różnicuje kantylenowa narracja, przeniknięta duchem „melodii nieskończonej”, sieć odniesień harmonicznych rozszerza się i zarazem zagęszcza, wzrasta częstotliwość modulacji, wydłużają się ciągi „błądzeń tonalnych”, rozszerza krąg tonacji w ramach jednego utworu. Sublimują się i rafinują figuracje i ornamentyka, a w rezultacie muzyka opalizuje i mieni się najsubtelniejszymi odcieniami dźwiękowego koloru. Nie wszystkie jednak nokturny przenika ta południowa, włoska aura. Są, nieliczne co prawda, wyjątki. Do nich należą przede wszystkim dwa nokturnowe dramaty (bo tak je można nazwać) o niezwykłej sile wyrazu: wcześniejszy, w tonacji cis-moll z op. 27, i późniejszy, c-moll z op. 48 (którego słuchamy na tym koncercie). W jego arcydoskonalej formalnej budowie uderza właśnie niezwykła kondensacja pierwiastka dramatycznego, maksymalne zgęszczenie dramatyzmu.

Polonez As-dur, skomponowany w Nohant, przeznaczony jest wyłącznie do słuchania. Ma kształt i charakter choreicznego poematu. Jest bliższy balladom niż tańcom, chociaż puls i wigor, a przede wszystkim majestatyczność poloneza wciąż wyraźnie z niego bije. Takty wstępne, zapowiadające wejście poloneza, mają rozmach i gest, zarazem dostojność i siłę przebicia. W temacie poloneza (głównym, inicjalnym, tym, który pozostaje w pamięci) brzmi siła, upór i dążenie wzwyż. Chopin każe grać go forte i maestoso. Siłę dają oktawy basu, upór stwarza notoryczne powtarzanie frazy inicjalnej. Dążenie wzwyż wyniesie – za moment – ów buńczuczny i dumny temat wzwyż klawiatury i w sferę brzmienia pełnego, absolutnego. Nawet sostenuto – niosące zazwyczaj moment wytchnienia - nie zwalnia z napięcia. Zaledwie nieco powstrzymuje pęd narracji. Uderzeniem siedmiu akordów fortissimo w niespodziewanym tu E-dur – wprowadza nas Chopin w przedziwny, niemal balladowy świat tria, partii centralnej utworu. Niezapomniane wrażenie sprawia prosty efekt fanfar rozbrzmiewających zrazu z oddali – na tle miarowych oktaw basu. I dopiero po osiągnięciu szczytu i pełni brzmienia odezwie się na moment ton liryczny. A potem, jak można się było spodziewać, wraca polonez w swej dumnej, heroicznej pełni, zwieńczony niewątpliwie zwycięską kodą.

Artur Hedley nazwał Poloneza As-dur op. 53 „dziełem, którego chwały głosić nie potrzeba”. Jachimecki uznał za „najdoskonalszy utwór w historii gatunku”. Hugo Leichtentritt wyraził swój podziw słowami: „Wszystko, co pod względem blasku, dostojeństwa, siły i entuzjazmu tkwi w polonezie – zostało w arcydziele tym wyrażone w sposób najbardziej porywający z możliwych”.

Chopin nie mógł znać pierwszego z czterech (dziś najpopularniejszego) Walca Mefisto Franciszka Liszta, swego dobrego znajomego. Kompozycja powstawała bowiem w latach 1859–1862, najpierw jako utwór orkiestrowy, potem w wersji na cztery ręce, dwa fortepiany i fortepian solo. Ilustruje epizod z Fausta Mikołaja Lenaua (1802–1850) nazwany Tańcem w wiejskim szynku: Mefistofeles gra na skrzypcach diabolicznego walca, a Faust w amoku tańczy z wiejską pięknością. W porywie tańczący wydostają się na zewnątrz i znikają w ciemnym lesie.

Sonata h-moll Franciszka Liszta powstawała etapami i ukończona została w lutym 1853 r. To najpoważniejsza bodaj wypowiedź kompozytora w prowadzonej wówczas dyskusji o formie wielkich utworów. Z tradycyjnego, złożonego z trzech lub czterech części cyklu sonatowego, w którym ogniwo pierwsze ma postać konfliktu między dwoma przeciwstawnymi tezami, Liszt czyni jedną wielką narrację, w której zawierają się zarówno przeciwstawne tezy, konsekwentnie ukazywane i przetwarzane w przeciągu całego utworu, jak i cztery (lub więcej – zależy, gdzie wprowadzić umowne podziały) części o odmiennym charakterze. Warto prześledzić, jakim przemianom poddawany jest pojawiający się na początku opadający, ponury motyw wstępny. Czasem brzmi sam, niekiedy wpleciony w inne wątki. W pewnym miejscu urasta do potęgi grzmotu, ale zawsze przygotowuje nadejście innego, istotnego dla narracji, materiału muzycznego. Co zapowiada na samym końcu? Prawdziwie romantyczna Sonata doczekała się wielu interpretacji poetyckich, od nawiązań do Pisma Świętego, przez alegorie losu człowieka, po ekscytującą umysły i serca w czasach Liszta historię Fausta. Najciekawsze jest jednak to, że dzięki mistrzostwu w operowaniu materiałem muzycznym i niesionymi przezeń uczuciami, wysłuchawszy grubo ponad pół godziny muzyki granej bez przerwy, po wybrzmieniu ostatniego dźwięku ma się wrażenie, że minęła zaledwie chwila, że wszystko, co się otworzyło, zostało zamknięte. Jak to się dzieje – to tajemnica arcydzieła.
