Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci
The two veristic short operas Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci have always been like inseparable twins. It all started with a competition to promote young Italian composers. Pietro Mascagni, who was still an unsuccessful composer at the time, chose a contemporary subject and wrote dramatically gripping music for the story of Santuzza, who was outcast by the village community and who, out of jealousy, betrays the relationship between Turiddu and Lola to her husband Alfio. Mascagni won the competition and became famous overnight. Impressed by this success, Ruggero Leoncavallo decided to try a short opera as well. Leoncavallo was inspired by a murder trial and by Catulle Mendès' play La Femme de Tabarininspire: a jealousy drama in a commedia dell'arte troupe about the beautiful Nedda, which ends with Nedda's murder and that of her lover. The cast of this revival promises a world-class level: Star tenor Roberto Alagna can be heard as both Turiddu and Canio, his partners are Catherine Naglestad (Santuzza) and Aleksandra Kurzak (Nedda).
