Die Integrität einer Gesellschaft zeigt sich am Umgang mit denen, die nicht ganz normal sind. Nicht den gesellschaftlichen oder medizinischen Normen zu entsprechen, bedeutet allzu oft Ausgrenzung und Stigmatisierung – doch was fängt man mit einer Normalität denn überhaupt an, die sich als hochgradig toxisch entpuppen kann? Next to normal erzählt die Geschichte einer „fast normalen“ vierköpfigen Familie – scheinbar durchschnittlich, gewöhnlich, konventionell. Erst bei näherer Betrachtung wird sichtbar, welche Auswirkungen die psychische Krankheit der Mutter Diana Goodman auf das Familienleben hat: Ehemann Dan versucht die Familie zusammenzuhalten, Tochter Natalie sucht als Musterschülerin die Anerkennung, die sie zu Hause vermisst, und rutscht doch in die Drogen- und Medikamentenabhängigkeit ab. Und Sohn Gabe? Auch bei ihm läuft einiges nicht ganz „normal“.

Next to Normal bringt die extremen Gefühlsschwankungen von Dianas bipolarer Störung auf die Bühne. Dabei spielen Trauer und Verlust eine ebenso zentrale Rolle wie Konflikte durch ihre psychiatrische Behandlung. Entsprechend groß ist auch die musikalische Bandbreite des Stücks: Von einfühlsamen Balladen bis zu mitreißenden Songs mit großen Musical-Finali bringt Next to Normal die ganze Klaviatur menschlicher Emotionen auf die Bühne. In diesem Sinne brachte es die New York Times auf den Punkt: es sei mehr als ein „Feel-Good-Musical – es ist ein Feel-Everything-Musical!“

Das Rock-Musical feierte 2009 am Broadway seine fulminante Premiere und kassierte zahlreiche Preise: unter anderem drei Tony Awards und den Pulitzer Preis – eine Auszeichnung, die einem Musical nur selten zuteil wird. Am Staatstheater Kassel konnte diese Produktion in der Spielzeit 2020/21 coronabedingt nicht realisiert werden und kommt nun endlich zu ihrer feierlichen Premiere. Für die Regie zeichnet sich der in Kassel bereits bekannte Regisseur Philipp Rosendahl verantwortlich – und kehrt so einmal mehr an seine langjährige Wirkungsstätte zurück.

The integrity of a society is shown by how it treats those who are not quite normal. Not conforming to societal or medical norms all too often means exclusion and stigmatization - but what do you even do with a normality that can turn out to be highly toxic? Next to normal tells the story of an "almost normal" family of four - seemingly average, ordinary, conventional. Only on closer inspection does it become apparent what effects the mental illness of mother Diana Goodman has on family life: husband Dan tries to keep the family together, daughter Natalie, as a model student, seeks the recognition she misses at home, and yet slips into the drug and drug addiction medication dependency. And son Gabe? Things aren't quite "normal" for him either.

Next to Normal brings to the stage the extreme emotional swings of Diana's bipolar disorder. Grief and loss play a central role here, as do conflicts caused by their psychiatric treatment. The musical spectrum of the piece is correspondingly large: from sensitive ballads to rousing songs with great musical finales, Next to Normal brings the whole range of human emotions to the stage. In that sense, the New York Times put it in a nutshell: it's more than a "feel-good musical—it's a feel-everything musical!"

 

The rock musical celebrated its brilliant premiere on Broadway in 2009 and received numerous prizes, including three Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize – an award that a musical rarely receives. At the Staatstheater Kassel, this production could not be realized in the 2020/21 season due to the corona virus and is now finally having its celebratory premiere. Director Philipp Rosendahl, who is already well-known in Kassel, is responsible for directing the film – and is thus once again returning to his long-standing workplace.
