Composer, poet, librettist and Italian intellectual of the 19th century, in love with Baudelaire and Wagner, Arrigo Boito was only 26 when he adapted the myth of Faust in 1868 in an integral version of the work of Goethe. A disconcerting and terribly ambitious work that also marks the desire of its author to break with romanticism but also with classical Italian opera.

No doubt the iconoclast Boito would not have denied the spectacular vision that the director Alex Ollé will offer of a work that also gives pride of place to a true vocal tradition. Defined by the sung tunes, the roles are indeed very strong and characteristic: if Mefistofele requires rare power and great vocal amplitude, it is customary for the characters of Marguerite and Hélène to be played by the same singer. As for the role of Faust, it is an obligatory passage, or almost, for any great operatic tenor.

Compositeur, poète, librettiste et intellectuel italien du XIXe siècle, amoureux de Baudelaire et de Wagner, Arrigo Boito n'a que 26 ans lorsqu'il adapte en 1868 le mythe de Faust dans une version intégrale de l'œuvre de Goethe. Une œuvre à l'époque déroutante et terriblement ambitieuse qui marque également le désir de son auteur de rompre avec le romantisme mais aussi avec l'opéra classique italien.

Sans doute l'iconoclaste Boito n'aurait-il pas renié la vision spectaculaire que proposera le metteur en scène Alex Ollé d'une œuvre qui donne aussi la part belle à une vraie tradition vocale. Définis par les airs chantés, les rôles y sont en effet très forts et caractéristiques : si Mefistofele requiert une puissance rare et une grande amplitude vocale, il est d'usage que les personnages de Marguerite et Hélène soient incarnés par la même chanteuse. Quant au rôle de Faust, il est un passage obligé, ou presque, pour tout grand ténor lyrique.
