In the year of the 125th anniversary of the birth of Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev (1891–1953), the Novaya Opera Theater presented one of the most mystical works of the composer. In the composer's operatic legacy, it is difficult to find a work with a more mysterious fate than Maddalena. In 1911 and 1913, Prokofiev wrote two keyboard versions of the opera, but neither the premiere planned for the 1913/14 season at the Moscow Free Theater, nor subsequent attempts at performance led to anything. And in the mid-30s, the composer had to part with Maddalena forever. Its manuscript ended up in Paris, in the archives of the Russian Music Publishing House, which later became the property of the English company Boosey & Hawkes. In the early 1970s, the work fell into the hands of the famous English conductor and composer Edward Downs. Determined to revive the opera, Downes completed the score with great tact and taste in the characteristic Prokofiev style. On March 25, 1979, "Maddalena" was first performed on the BBC radio station, and the first stage production took place in 1981 at the festival in Graz (Austria). The national history of the opera resumed only 75 years after the creation of the work - conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky recorded the first gramophone record of Maddalena, and in September 1987 this recording was performed on the All-Union Radio. The Novaya Opera first turned to Prokofiev's early opera at the beginning of its career; it happened in 1991, when the whole world celebrated the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth. At the end of September, the soloists, choir and orchestra of the Novaya Opera performed "Maddalena" at the Sagra Musicale Umbra festival in Perugia (Italy), and on December 29 - at the festival "December Evenings of Svyatoslav Richter" in Moscow. Both concert performances were conducted by Evgeny Kolobov.
