The premiere took place on February 27, 2004, and already in 2005 the performance was awarded two Golden Mask awards: “The work of a conductor in the opera” - Alexander Anisimov and “The work of an artist in a musical theater” - Zinovy ​​Margolin. The plot of the opera was based on N. Leskov's story "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District", one of the most terrible pages of Russian literature, exposing the "dark kingdom" of pre-reform merchant Russia. The librettist A. Preis and the composer D. Shostakovich significantly rethought the plot of Leskov's story. Almost without changing anything in the actions of Katerina Lvovna, they changed their motives. The main character appeared not only as a product, but also as a victim of the Domostroy way of merchant life. Opera by D. Shostakovich with a truly tragic sound. Its action is full of events, in which the characters of numerous characters are deeply revealed, and musical sketches amaze with psychological accuracy and insight.
