The image of a fallen (this is how the name of the opera is translated) woman with a noble soul in the 19th century is gaining rapid popularity. In addition to Balzac's novel of the same name, the theme of splendor and poverty of courtesans was addressed by "Parisian secrets" by Eugene Sue and "Petersburg slums" by Vsevolod Krestovsky; Tolstoy's "Resurrection" ... In 1848, Verdi witnessed the scandalous success of the autobiographical novel "The Lady of the Camellias" by Alexandre Dumas, the son, where Dumas described his own story of infatuation with the famous lady of the demi-monde Marie Duplessis (Marguerite Gauthier in the book), who died early due to consumption. The work gained such fame that the word "camellia" soon became a household word for women in content.

The premiere of Verdi's opera based on this novel was also not without scandal, although the audience's unfavorable reaction was caused not so much by the plot and music as by the performers. How else to explain that in a short time, "La Traviata" triumphantly bypassed the largest theaters, and now it is included in the golden ten of the world opera repertoire? The music of Verdi's opera is permeated with the elements of the waltz that reigned in the European salons of the 19th century. How accurately Pushkin's lines convey this atmosphere: "Monotonous and insane, Like a whirlwind of young life, A noisy whirlwind of a waltz spins, Couple flickers after couple." That is how, in pursuit of pleasure, the bright and short life of the courtesan Violetta flies by. The waltz for that time was more than just a dance: its appearance made a real revolution. Replacing the prim minuet of the previous era, in which the partners could only afford to hold their fingertips, the waltz immediately gained the reputation of the “dance of the devil” and became a symbol of seduction. His movements were considered indecent, because the gentleman, in front of others, hugged the lady and pressed her to him. However, this did not prevent the waltz from spreading like an epidemic and reaching the circles of the highest society.

"La Traviata", in fact, is an opera-portrait of the main character; the characters of her lover Alfred and his father Georges Germont are revealed mainly in interaction with her. The role of Violetta is, of course, the role of a prima donna, and opera productions, as a rule, are made specifically for the leading soprano. Primorsky La Traviata, transferred from the historical stage of the Mariinsky Theatre, was performed at the invitation of Valery Gergiev by a French team led by director Charles Roubaud. A magnificent performance with silver and gold scenery based on historical sketches and kilometers of silk and velvet spent on tailoring luxurious costumes was staged in 2002 for the rising star of the world opera Anna Netrebko.

Образ падшей (именно так переводится название оперы) женщины с благородной душой в XIX веке набирает стремительную популярность. К теме блеска и нищеты куртизанок, помимо одноимённого романа Бальзака, обращались «Парижские тайны» Эжена Сю и «Петербургские трущобы» Всеволода Крестовского, среди литературных сестёр и наследниц их героинь — Соня Мармеладова Достоевского, купринская Женька из повести «Яма» и Катюша Маслова из «Воскресения» Толстого… В 1848 году Верди стал свидетелем скандального успеха автобиографического романа Александра Дюма-сына «Дама с камелиями», где Дюма описал собственную историю увлечения знаменитой дамой полусвета Мари Дюплесси (в книге — Маргарита Готье), рано умершей вследствие чахотки. Произведение обрело такую известность, что слово «камелия» вскоре стало нарицательным для обозначения женщин на содержании.

Премьера вердиевской оперы, сочинённой по мотивам этого романа, тоже не обошлась без скандала, хотя неблагоприятную реакцию публики вызвали не столько сюжет и музыка, сколько исполнители. Иначе как объяснить, что уже через короткое время «Травиата» с триумфом обошла крупнейшие театры, а сейчас входит в золотую десятку мирового оперного репертуара? Музыка оперы Верди пронизана стихией вальса, царившего в европейских салонах XIX века. Как точно передают эту атмосферу пушкинские строки: «Однообразный и безумный, Как вихорь жизни молодой, Кружится вальса вихорь шумный, Чета мелькает за четой». Именно так, в погоне за наслаждениями, пролетает яркая и короткая жизнь куртизанки Виолетты. Вальс для того времени — больше, чем просто танец: его появление произвело настоящую революцию. Придя на смену чопорному менуэту предыдущей эпохи, в котором партнёры могли себе позволить лишь взяться за кончики пальцев, вальс сразу завоевал репутацию «пляски дьявола» и стал символом обольщения. Его движения считались неприличными, ведь кавалер на глазах у окружающих обнимал даму и прижимал её к себе. Однако это не помешало вальсу распространиться подобно эпидемии и достичь кругов самого высшего общества.

«Травиата», по сути — опера-портрет главной героини; персонажи её возлюбленного Альфреда и его отца Жоржа Жермона раскрываются в основном во взаимодействии с ней. Роль Виолетты — безусловно, партия примадонны, и постановки оперы, как правило, делаются специально под ведущую сопрано. Приморская «Травиата», перенесённая с исторической сцены Мариинского театра, осуществлена по приглашению Валерия Гергиева французской командой во главе с режиссёром Шарлем Рубо. Великолепный спектакль с серебряно-золотыми декорациями по историческим эскизам и километрами шелка и бархата, затраченными на пошив роскошных костюмов, ставился в 2002 году в расчёте на восходящую звезду мировой оперы Анну Нетребко.
