The Chateauville Foundation was founded in 1997 by world-renowned conductor Lorin Maazel and actress Dietlinde Turban Maazel with a mission to nurture young artists, foster collaborative artistic enterprise, and create opportunities within the community for a shared cultural experience. In the summer of 2009, the Foundation launched the Castleton Festival, which has quickly become its centrepiece. The Festival regularly presents music and opera at its own opera house outside Washington, DC; its productions have included The Barber of Seville, Carmen, and La Bohème, which it brings to the Royal Opera House Muscat.

Perhaps Giacomo Puccini’s most beloved work, La Bohème tells the stories of a circle of young Parisian artists; bohemians who reject the typical bourgeois values of nineteenth-century France in favour of expressing their artistry. Despite the tragedy and impoverishment surrounding them, they live for the moment and try to live life to its fullest. Not surprisingly, false illusions and notions of utopia abound; these hopelessly romantic artists tragically long for a deeper connection to society – a connection they cannot find.
