Das Musikfest Berlin zieht mit der Karajan-Akademie unter Simon Rattle durch die roten Schluchten der Canyons in Utah und hinauf zu den Sternen: Olivier Messiaens „Des Canyons aux étoiles …“ ist ein Geburtstagsgeschenk an die USA und zugleich eine spirituelle Hymne auf die Verwobenheit des Göttlichen mit der Natur, mit den Stimmen der Vögel und den Farbtönen des Regenbogens.

Von den amerikanischen Canyons bis zu den Sternen: Als die New Yorker Kunstmäzenin Alice Tully anlässlich des 200. Geburtstags der Vereinigten Staaten ein neues Werk bei Olivier Messiaen in Auftrag gab, ahnte sie wohl, dass sie keinen Hymnus auf die USA erhalten würde. Stattdessen komponierte der gläubige Katholik „Des Canyons aux étoiles …“, um „Gott in seiner gesamten Schöpfung zu verherrlichen“, mit allen „Schönheiten der Erde (ihren Felsen und dem Gesang der Vögel) und den Schönheiten des physischen und des spirituellen Himmels“. Hierfür ließ sich Messiaen von der spektakulären Natur des Landes inspirieren, reiste zu den Cedar Breaks und zum Bryce Canyon, dem „größten Wunder von Utah“, einem „Kessel aus roten, orangefarbenen und violetten, fantastisch geformten Felsen: Schlösser, viereckige und dickbäuchige Türme, natürliche Fenster, Brücken, Statuen, Säulen, ganze Städte, dann und wann ein tiefes schwarzes Loch“. Mit dem abendfüllenden Werk, dessen Klangfarben „alle Farbtöne des Regenbogens“ enthalten und in den Worten des synästhetisch veranlagten Komponisten „um das Blau des [amerikanischen Singvogels] Steller’s Jay und das Rot des Bryce Canyon“ kreisen, lassen Sir Simon Rattle und die jungen Musiker*innen der Karajan-Akademie der Berliner Philharmoniker das diesjährige Musikfest Berlin ausklingen, bevor am nächsten Tag der RIAS Kammerchor mit Anton Bruckner den Schlussklang setzt. Stefan Dohr, Solo-Hornist der Philharmoniker, übernimmt den diffizilen „Appel interstellaire”, mit dem das Horn den zweiten Teil des Werks einleitet. Kirill Gerstein nimmt am „Vogel-Klavier“ Platz, das, erklärt Messiaen, zugleich ein „Orchester-Klavier“ ist.

To conclude the festival, Musikfest Berlin and the Karajan Academy under Simon Rattle fly through the red gorges of the canyons in Utah and up to the stars: Olivier Messiaen’s “Des Canyons aux étoiles…” is a birthday gift to the USA and also a spiritual hymn to the closely woven links between the divine and nature, between birdsong and the shades of colour in the rainbow.   

From the canyons of America up to the stars: when the New York art patron Alice Tully commissioned a new work from Olivier Messiaen to commemorate the bicentenary of the United States, she probably suspected she was unlikely to receive a hymn to the USA. Instead, the committed Catholic composed “Des Canyons aux étoiles…” in order to “glorify God for all he has created,” with all “the beauties of the earth (its rocks and birdsong) and the beauties of the physical and spiritual heavens.” Messiaen drew inspiration from the country’s spectacular landscape, travelling to Cedar Breaks and to Bryce Canyon, “the greatest wonder of Utah,” a “bowl of red, orange and violet-coloured rocks: palaces, rectangular and fat-bellied towers, natural windows, bridges, statues, pillars, whole cities and now and again a deep, black hole.” With this evening-length work, whose tone colours contain “all the colours of the rainbow” and in the words of the composer, whose synaesthesia was well-known, “revolved around the blue of the Steller’s Jay [an American songbird] and the red of Bryce Canyon,” Sir Simon Rattle and the young musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Karajan Academy will close this year’s Musikfest Berlin. Stefan Dohr, the Philharmoniker’s solo horn player, takes on the delicate “Appel interstellaire”, with which the horn opens Part Two of the work. Kirill Gerstein will be seated at the “bird piano,” which, Messiaen explains, is also an “orchestra piano.”
