The last Berlin operetta of the interwar period, L'auberge du Cheval Blanc is a hybrid work that mixes Tyrolean folklore, Viennese operetta, cabaret and Berlin dance hall. In a charming establishment in the Austrian Alps, the arrival of eccentric clients from the south of France breaks the serenity of the place which tends to turn into a "Spanish inn".

Translated into many languages, its French adaptation earned it at the time more than 1,700 performances at the Théâtre du Châtelet with Bourvil in the role of Léopold.
