In the first decade of the 19th century, the twenty-year-old Gioachino Rossini had already conquered the theater scene with Tancredi and L'Italiana in Algeri . At the end of 1815 he signed a contract with the impresario of the Teatro Argentina in Rome to write an opera, to be included in the following year's Carnival program, entitled Almaviva, or sia L'inutile precauzione . The subject was well known because it was taken from the comedy Le barbier de Séville by Beaumarchais which had already been set to music by many other authors: among them the famous Giovanni Paisiello, whose Barber of Seville (1782) had become a rage in the theaters of half of Europe. The feat of proposing the remakeof a famous title while Paisiello was still alive was extremely reckless and so Rossini, to protect himself from possible accusations, chose a different title - Almaviva precisely - and decided to print in the booklet a warning to the public in which he declared that out of respect for against the older master he had asked the poet Cesare Sterbini to write a new libretto for the occasion. But the precaution turned out to be useless because at the debut, on February 20, 1816, the opera was booed and the evening degenerated into brawl as told by Rossini himself. However, the composer from Pesaro was not mistaken about the value of his work, and after the first performances his Barbierereceived the well-deserved applause that was due to it, outclassing Paisiello's work and quickly becoming the most loved and represented work. A few years later, a musician of the caliber of Giuseppe Verdi would give Rossini's Barber of Seville the prize of "the most beautiful comic opera that exists, for its abundance of musical ideas, for its comic verve and for the truth of its declamation".

Nel primo decennio dell’Ottocento il ventenne Gioachino Rossini aveva già conquistato le scene teatrali con Tancredi e L’Italiana in Algeri. Alla fine del 1815 firmò un contratto con l’impresario del Teatro Argentina di Roma per scrivere un’opera, da inserire nel cartellone di Carnevale dell’anno seguente, intitolata Almaviva, o sia L’inutile precauzione. Il soggetto era ben noto perché tratto dalla commedia Le barbier de Séville di Beaumarchais già messo in musica da molti altri autori: tra essi il celebre Giovanni Paisiello, il cui Barbiere di Siviglia (1782) aveva furoreggiato nei teatri di mezza Europa. L’impresa di proporre il remake di un titolo famoso mentre era ancora in vita Paisiello era oltremodo temeraria e così Rossini, per mettersi al riparo da possibili accuse, scelse un titolo diverso - Almaviva appunto - e decise di stampare nel libretto un avvertimento al pubblico in cui dichiarava che per rispetto nei confronti del più anziano maestro aveva chiesto al poeta Cesare Sterbini di scrivere per l’occasione un nuovo libretto. Ma la precauzione si rivelò inutile poiché al debutto, il 20 febbraio 1816, l’opera fu fischiata e la serata degenerò in bagarre come raccontato da Rossini stesso. Il compositore pesarese tuttavia non si ingannava sul valore del suo lavoro, e dopo le prime repliche il suo Barbiere incassò il plauso meritatissimo che gli spettava surclassando l’opera di Paisiello e diventando in breve l’opera più amata e rappresentata. Qualche anno più tardi, un musicista del calibro di Giuseppe Verdi avrebbe dato al Barbiere di Siviglia rossiniano la palma di “opera buffa più bella che esista, per abbondanza di idee musicali, per verve comica e per verità di declamazione”.
