Between sadism and sentimentality, passion and the will to reconcile: with LES VÊPRES SICILIENNES, Giuseppe Verdi only superficially depicts the historically...

Verdi demanded “great, passionate and original material” for the first opera he was to write for the Paris Opéra. What the star author Eugène Scribe finally provided him with was a libretto of similar political explosiveness as the texts of the grand opéras Giacomo Meyerbeer, with whom Scribe had previously worked for LES HUGUENOTS and LE PROPHETE. Because, like them, LES VÊPRES SICILIENNES dealt with a topic that was ostensibly historical, but at the same time highly topical. The uprising of the Sicilians against their French occupiers in 1282, known as the "Sicilian Vespers", could easily be linked to the most prominent expansion project in France around the middle of the 19th century: the conquest and colonization of Algeria that began in 1830, which was also accompanied by continuous, bloodily suppressed uprisings. This reference also forms the approach to the staging by the French director Olivier Py, who has already shown his flair for how the grand opéra deals with political subjects at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in Meyerbeer's LE PROPHETE: The French occupation of Algeria from the time of Verdi to in The 1950s form the framework for his narration of this story, with which Verdi, after LA TRAVIATA and RIGOLETTO, again expands the focus of his music dramas: it is no longer just about the fate of the individual, but about his relationship to the weal and woe of entire peoples it in LES VÊPRES SICILIENNES, unconditional hatred,

At the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the work, which was long overshadowed by the other great Verdi operas, will not be performed in the Italian adaptation that has long been customary, but in the original French version from 1855. The principal guest conductor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Enrique Mazzola, who has already been enthusiastically celebrated for his conducting of Meyerbeer's LE PROPHETE, VASCO DA GAMA and DINORAH, will conduct the rostrum.

„Einen großartigen, leidenschaftlichen und originellen Stoff“ verlangte Verdi für die erste Oper, die er für die Pariser Opéra schreiben sollte. Was ihm der Starautor Eugène Scribe schließlich lieferte, war darüber hinaus ein Libretto von ähnlicher politischer Brisanz wie die Texte der Grand opéras Giacomo Meyerbeers, mit dem Scribe zuvor für LES HUGUENOTS und LE PROPHETE zusammengearbeitet hatte. Denn wie diese behandelte LES VÊPRES SICILIENNES ein Thema, das zwar vordergründig historisch, zugleich aber auch hoch aktuell war. Der unter dem Titel „Sizilianische Vesper“ bekannte Aufstand der Sizilianer gegen ihre französischen Besatzer 1282 ließ sich ohne weiteres mit dem prominentesten Expansionsprojekt Frankreichs um die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts kurzschließen: der 1830 begonnenen Eroberung und Kolonialisierung Algeriens, die gleichfalls von kontinuierlichen, blutig niedergeschlagenen Aufständen begleitet war. Dieser Bezug bildet auch den Ansatz für die Inszenierung des französischen Regisseurs Olivier Py, der sein Gespür für den Umgang der Grand opéra mit politischen Stoffen an der Deutschen Oper Berlin bereits an Meyerbeers LE PROPHETE gezeigt hat: Die französische Besetzung Algeriens von der Zeit Verdis bis in die fünfziger Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts bilden den Rahmen für seine Erzählung dieser Geschichte, mit der Verdi nach LA TRAVIATA und RIGOLETTO wieder den Fokus seiner Musikdramen erweitert: Nicht mehr nur um das Schicksal des Einzelnen, sondern um seinen Bezug zum Wohl und Wehe ganzer Völker geht es in LES VÊPRES SICILIENNES, bedingungsloser Hass, Versöhnungswille und der Zwiespalt zwischen diesen Extremen bestimmt das Handeln der Hauptfiguren ebenso wie die Aktionen der Besatzer und der Unterdrückten.

An der Deutschen Oper Berlin wird das Werk, das lange im Schatten der anderen großen Verdi-Opern stand, nicht in der lange Zeit üblichen italienischen Adaption, sondern in der französischen Urfassung von 1855 aufgeführt. Am Pult steht der Erste Gastdirigent der Deutschen Oper Berlin, Enrique Mazzola, der bereits für seine Dirigate von Meyerbeers LE PROPHETE, VASCO DA GAMA und DINORAH enthusiastisch gefeiert wurde.
