A tribute to Berlioz, a great innovator, and an investigation of the metamorphosis of XIX-century symphonic writing: open to cyclicity and melodic “narration”, to literary suggestions, to the magnetism of solo virtuosity, but also to “classic” architectural rigour. And thus, Berlioz’s symphonic poem (initially commissioned by Paganini as a solo viola concerto), inspired by Italy and by Byron’s Childe Harold’s Piligrimage, will be performed by 40-year-old French Antoine Tamestit, one of the greatest violists on the international scene.The programme also features Liszt’s powerful Mazeppa, the story of an adventurer celebrated by Byron himself and Victor Hugo among others, and the monumental and infallible symphonic model of Brahms’s so-called Saint Anthony Variations.

Un omaggio al grande innovatore Berlioz, indagando le trasformazioni della scrittura sinfonica ottocentesca: aperta alla ciclicità e alla “narrazione” melodica, alle suggestioni letterarie, al magnetismo del virtuosismo solistico, ma anche al rigore architettonico “classico”. Allora, ecco che il suo poema sinfonico – ma inizialmente doveva essere un concerto, commissionato niente meno che da Paganini – ispirato all’Italia e al protagonista del Childe Harold’s Piligrimage di Byron, e qui affidato a uno dei più sorprendenti violisti della scena internazionale, il quarantenne francese Antoine Tamestit, si rispecchia nella potenza sonora del Mazeppa diLiszt, riferito all’avventuriero celebrato dallo stesso Byron e, tra gli altri, da Victor Hugo; e nel monumentale e infallibile sinfonismo delle Variazioni elaborate da Brahms sul cosiddetto Chorale in honorem St. Antonii.
