Am 16. Januar 1794 erlebte Mozarts populärste Oper, „Die Zauberflöte“, ihre Weimarer Erstaufführung. Im Juli desselben Jahres wurde sie in dieser Fassung im Kurtheater Lauchstädt erstaufgeführt. Die Inszenierung wurde ein großer Erfolg: in Weimar folgten bis 1817 insgesamt 82 Vorstellungen, in Lauchstädt bis 1803 dreizehn Aufführungen. Weitere Gastspiele fanden in Rudolstadt, Leipzig, Halle, Mannheim, Dessau und in der Hofoper Berlin statt.

Die Weimarer Fassung mit den Texten von Christian AugustVulpius ist ein musik- und theaterhistorischer Meilenstein der goetheschen Mozartrezeption und zugleich ein eindrucksvoller Beleg für die Aufführungspraxis im Musik-theater der Goethezeit.

Im Rahmen des „Festspiels der deutschen Sprache“ wird der Versuch unternommen, anhand des in Weimar vorhandenen, originalen Aufführungsmaterials diese Fassung der Oper so weit wie möglich zu rekonstruieren.

On January 16, 1794, Mozart's most popular opera, The Magic Flute, had its Weimar premiere. In July of the same year it was premiered in this version at the Kurtheater Lauchstädt. The production was a great success: a total of 82 performances followed in Weimar by 1817, and thirteen performances in Lauchstädt by 1803. Further guest performances took place in Rudolstadt, Leipzig, Halle, Mannheim, Dessau and in the Hofoper Berlin.

The Weimar version with the texts by Christian August Vulpius is a music and theater historical milestone in Goethe's reception of Mozart and at the same time impressive evidence of the performance practice in music theater of Goethe's time.

As part of the "Festival of the German Language", an attempt is being made to reconstruct this version of the opera as far as possible using the original performance material available in Weimar.
