The Gypsy Baron tells the story of the love between a handsome young swashbuckler returned from exile and a beautiful Gypsy girl – both of them with a mysterious past! Around them swirl colourful larger-than-life characters including a fortune-telling Romany queen, a bombastic pig farmer, a pair of star-crossed lovers, a band of Gypsies, a pompous bureaucrat and his long-lost wife.
Since its premiere in 1885 this has remained one of the most popular of all Viennese operettas. Johann Strauss II, the Waltz King, lavished some of his greatest music including beautiful waltzes, stirring marches and joyous polkas.
