1829. Felix Mendelssohn visita la Scozia e rimane folgorato dal paesaggio dell’Isola di Staffa, e in particolare dalla Grotta di Fingal. In quel luogo, travolto dall’ispirazione, scrive la prima celebre frase musicale dell’ouverture “Le Ebridi”, che appunta su un foglio e spedisce in una lettera alla sorella. La carica emotiva di questa composizione testimonia come il Romanticismo stia ormai affermandosi con forza, ma la ricerca del rispetto delle proporzioni all’interno della struttura musicale prova altresì come la lezione dei grandi maestri del Classicismo sia ancora viva nella mente del giovane Mendelssohn. Ecco spiegarsi allora come il tema iniziale de “Le Ebridi” coniughi tanto l’urgenza espressiva quanto l’osservanza di quelle proporzioni classiche che potremo apprezzare ancora meglio nella loro perfezione nelle due composizioni a seguire di Mozart e Beethoven. Affiancare questi due capolavori consente di ribaltare la prospettiva con la quale siamo soliti considerare i due compositori. Se nel Concerto l’imponenza della forma e la complessità quasi “Beethoveniana” della parte solistica fa emergere la piena maturità compositiva di Mozart, nella Sinfonia conosceremo invece un Beethoven dalla scrittura frizzante ed energica, ma anche estremamente tenera nello spunto melodico del secondo movimento.

1829. Felix Mendelssohn visits Scotland and is struck by the landscape of the Isle of Staffa, and in particular by Fingal's Cave. In that place, overwhelmed by inspiration, he wrote the first famous musical phrase of the overture "The Hebrides", which he jotted down on a piece of paper and sent in a letter to his sister. The emotional charge of this composition testifies to how Romanticism is now forcefully establishing itself, but the search for respect for proportions within the musical structure also proves how the lesson of the great masters of Classicism is still alive in the mind of the young Mendelssohn. This explains how the initial theme of "The Hebrides" combines both expressive urgency and the observance of those classical proportions which we will be able to appreciate even better in their perfection in the two following compositions by Mozart and Beethoven. Placing these two masterpieces side by side allows us to overturn the perspective with which we usually consider the two composers. If in the Concerto the grandeur of the form and the almost "Beethovenian" complexity of the solo part brings out Mozart's full compositional maturity, in the Symphony we will instead get to know a Beethoven with lively and energetic writing, but also extremely tender in the melodic inspiration of the second movement.
