Commande du mécène bâlois Paul Sacher à Richard Strauss alors exilé en Suisse à la suite de sa complaisance envers le régime nazi, les Métamorphoses pour 23 cordes solistes sont à la fois une extraordinaire étude pour cordes, d’une écriture dense et touffue, en même temps que le terrible constat de la fin d’un monde dans une Allemagne en ruines. Entièrement bâtie sur un motif de la Marche funèbre de la Symphonie Héroïque de Beethoven, elle vient douloureusement témoigner de l’horreur de la Guerre enfin achevée et du néant qu’elle a produit. Le reste du programme consacré à Mozart et à Beethoven vient encore renforcer la stupeur devant une civilisation capable du meilleur comme du pire. Appartenant encore au “Style galant” le Concerto pour violon No 5, le plus développé des cinq, composés par Mozart, contient de séduisantes mélodies et un finale à la hongroise selon la mode de l’époque. Si la Symphonie No 1 de Beethoven marche encore sur les traces brillantes de Haydn et de Mozart, elle n’en constitue pas moins le premier jalon d’une série qui allait conditionner toute l’histoire de la musique écrite après elle.

Commissioned by Basel patron Paul Sacher from Richard Strauss, then exiled in Switzerland following his complacency towards the Nazi regime, the Metamorphosen, study for 23 solo strings are both an extraordinary study for strings, with dense writing, at the same time than the terrible acknowledgment of the end of a world in a Germany in ruins. Built entirely on a motif from the Funeral March of Beethoven's Eroica Symphony, it bears painful witness to the horror of the War finally over and the nothingness it produced. The rest of the program dedicated to Mozart and Beethoven further reinforces the amazement in front of a civilization capable of the best as well as the worst. Still belonging to the “Galant Style”, the Violin Concerto No. 5, the most developed of the five, composed by Mozart, contains seductive melodies and a Hungarian finale according to the fashion of the time. If Beethoven's Symphony No. 1still walks in the brilliant footsteps of Haydn and Mozart, it nonetheless constitutes the first milestone in a series that would condition the entire history of music written after it.
