It's the 1920s in Berlin. A time characterized by extreme poverty and unrestrained enjoyment, in which one sells one's own body for a bit of joie de vivre. Here the American writer Clifford Bradshaw falls in love with the singer Sally Bowles. She is the acclaimed star of the show and dreams of a career as an actress. Clifford makes ends meet as an English teacher and writes a novel. When Sally becomes unemployed, she moves in with the young writer. They become a couple and plan a future together. Clifford's landlady, Fraulein Schneider, is also newly in love. She would like to marry the Jewish greengrocer Schulz. But the onset of fascist terror quickly shattered private dreams. Nazi henchmen destroy the vegetable shop. Miss Schneider distances herself from her marriage plans. Clifford's friend, the currency smuggler Ernst Ludwig, turns out to be a henchman of the brown violence. Faced with political danger, Clifford wants to leave Germany with Sally. But she decides on her career and stays in Berlin. The musical Cabaret tells of love in the Roaring Twenties and of its failure in the face of the National Socialists' seizure of power. Cabaret is based on the autobiographical short stories of the British-American writer Christopher Isherwood (1904-1986). Attracted by the reputation and sexual promiscuity of the city of Berlin, Isherwood had come to Germany in 1929 after dropping out of medical school to write a major Berlin novel. He published his experiences from this period in the book Good bye to Berlin (1939). In 1933 he emigrated to California, where he worked as a screenwriter. In the 1950s he became an icon of the gay and lesbian movement because he was one of the first prominent authors to come out about his homosexuality. Attracted by the reputation and sexual promiscuity of the city of Berlin, Isherwood had come to Germany in 1929 after dropping out of medical school to write a major Berlin novel. Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome / Fremder, étranger, stranger / Schön, dass ihr da seid / Je suis enchanté! / Happy to see you … – singt der Conférencier und verführt seine Gäste in die zwielichtige Unterwelt des Kit Kat Clubs. Es sind die 1920er Jahre in Berlin. Eine Zeit, geprägt von extremer Armut und hemmungslosem Genuss, in der man den eigenen Körper für ein bisschen Lebenslust verkauft.
Hier verliebt sich der amerikanische Schriftsteller Clifford Bradshaw in die Sängerin Sally Bowles. Sie ist der gefeierte Star der Show und träumt von einer Karriere als Schauspielerin. Clifford schlägt sich als Englischlehrer durch und schreibt an einem Roman. Als Sally arbeitslos wird, zieht sie zu dem jungen Schriftsteller. Sie werden ein Paar und planen eine gemeinsame Zukunft. Auch Cliffords Pensionswirtin, das Fräulein Schneider, ist frisch verliebt. Sie möchte den jüdischen Gemüsehändler Schulz heiraten. Doch der beginnende faschistische Terror lässt die privaten Träume schnell zerplatzen. Nazischergen zerstören das Gemüsegeschäft. Fräulein Schneider nimmt von ihren Heiratsabsichten Abstand. Cliffords Freund, der Devisenschmuggler Ernst Ludwig, entpuppt sich als Handlanger der braunen Gewalt. Die politische Gefahr vor Augen, will Clifford Deutschland zusammen mit Sally verlassen. Doch sie entscheidet sich für ihre Karriere und bleibt in Berlin.
Das Musical Cabaret erzählt von der Liebe in den Wilden Zwanzigern und von ihrem Scheitern angesichts der nationalsozialistischen Machtergreifung.

Cabaret basiert auf den autobiografischen Erzählungen des britisch-amerikanischen Schriftstellers Christopher Isherwood (1904–1986). Angezogen von dem Ruf und der sexuellen Freizügigkeit der Stadt Berlin, war Isherwood nach einem abgebrochenen Medizinstudium 1929 nach Deutschland gekommen, um einen großen Berlin-Roman zu schreiben. Seine Erlebnisse aus dieser Zeit veröffentlichte er in dem Buch Good bye to Berlin (1939). 1933 emigrierte er nach Kalifornien, wo er als Drehbuchautor arbeitete. In den 1950er Jahren wurde er zu einer Ikone der Schwulen- und Lesbenbewegung, weil er sich als einer der ersten prominenten Autor:innen zu seiner Homosexualität bekannte.
