Smetana wrote down Dalibor's musical motif in his notebook as early as May 1863 next to the duet "Verná milování" from The Sold Bride , and although these two consecutive operas were born in his head at the same time, their characters could only could hardly be more different. After the sunny and humorous work, a tragic opera was created, the subject of which became the historical figure of the Czech knight Dalibor from Kozojed and, above all, the rumors associated with him. Smetana Daliborhe created a new chapter of heroic themes for the Czech opera repertoire, and the work also entered the history of Czech culture with its premiere, which was conducted by the master on May 16, 1868, on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of the National Theatre.

Hudební motiv Dalibora si Smetana do svého zápisníku zapsal již v květnu 1863 hned vedle duetu „Věrné milování“ z Prodané nevěsty, a třebaže se tyto dvě po sobě následující opery rodily v jeho hlavě současně, jejich charaktery mohly jen stěží být více odlišné. Po slunném a humorem prosyceném díle vznikla opera tragická, jejímž námětem se stala historická postava českého rytíře Dalibora z Kozojed a především pak pověsti s ní spojené. Smetana Daliborem vytvořil pro český operní repertoár novou kapitolu heroických námětů a dílo se do historie české kultury zapsalo také svou premiérou, která se za mistrova dirigování konala 16. května 1868 při příležitosti položení základního kamene Národního divadla.
